Ingredients

  • Dry Ingredients

    • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour

    • ¾ cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder

    • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar

    • 1 ½ tsp baking powder

    • 1 ½ tsp baking soda

    • 1 tsp salt

    • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • Wet Ingredients

    • 2 large eggs

    • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk (or substitute with milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)

    • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil

    • 2 tsp vanilla extract

    • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water

  • Optional Toppings

    • Powdered sugar for dusting

    • Chocolate glaze or frosting

    • Cinnamon sugar sprinkle

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prep
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.

  2. Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.

  3. Combine Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract.

  4. Mix Batter
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture, stirring until smooth. Slowly add the boiling water while mixing—your batter will be thin, but this ensures a moist cake.

  5. Bake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. Cool & Decorate
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Once completely cooled, dust with powdered sugar, frost with chocolate glaze, or add your favorite toppings.

  7. Serve
Slice and enjoy this luxurious treat with a cup of coffee, tea, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
